The Clark County Health Department on Friday reported one of its highest numbers of new COVID-19 patients since the pandemic began.
There were 20 new positive cases of the respiratory disease reported that day, 18 of them residents of Winchester’s long-term care facility, Fountain Circle who ranged in age from 44 to 93 years. A female staff member at the nursing home also tested positive.
On Thursday, after the Sun’s print edition went to press, the Health Department reported on additional case for that day, a 42-year-old woman.
And on Saturday, it reported one case involving a 23-year-old man.
Because of medical privacy laws, more information about the patients is unavailable.
In all, the Health Department is working 65 active cases out of a total of 111 positive test cases in the county.
In his daily briefing Saturday, Gov. Andy Beshear reported 183 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 13,630 as of 4 p.m.
He also reported two new deaths from the virus, raising the total to 524.
One of the victims was a 91-year-old woman from Hopkins County, the other an 80-year-old woman from Jefferson County.
“The virus remains a serious threat to Kentuckians,” Beshear reminded his listeners. “As we try to safely return to a new normal, we can’t forget we’re still up against an invisible enemy.”
The governor said the death toll from the illness has been devastating.
“As we recognize those we’ve lost, let’s remember and celebrate their extraordinary lives,” he said.
At least 3,530 Kentuckians have recovered from the illness.
The Department for Public Health has a printable daily COVID-19 report that breaks down the numbers county by county, as well as by age range and race. It can be found at chfs.ky.gov/agencies/dph/covid19/COVID19DailyReport.pdf.
