AARP Chapter 632 met Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the James B. Allen Generations Center with Sue Staton, president, presiding.

Sixteen members and guests were present.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Betty Ballard led the group in prayer.

Sherry Mohr, executive director of Rapha Ministries, 139 Jefferson St., was the guest speaker. This organization provides primary health care, pharmaceutical and lab services for the uninsured in Clark County who do not receive medical assistance from the government.

Scott Baker and his wife opened Rapha Ministries in 2006. It is a Christian organization that holds church services in the basement of New Beginnings each Sunday at 6 p.m. The motto is, “The Lord is my healer.”

Besides Sundays, Rapha is open every Monday and every other Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Rapha would be open more if they had the funding; they rely solely on private monetary and medical supply donations.

Dr. Suzanne Pica, internist, is the primary volunteer. Marianna Brookshire, physician’s assistant, also volunteers with the ministry.

Surgeries are performed on Sundays as needed by Lexington physicians.

Don Rose announced the Feb. 20 legislative meeting from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Frankfort. Topics to be discussed include prescription drugs, caregiving and long term support services, financial resilience, and fraud prevention.

AARP will pay attendees’ fuel and lunch expenses. Rose said he and Lynn May plan to be there.

Anyone else interested in attending need to pre-register by Feb. 18.

May said it is important have a good showing to make an impact and tell those in power what we want. Rose will provide meeting room info soon.

Those interested in joining or maintaining AARP membership were reminded annual dues for the local chapter are only $6.

Colista Ledford read the secretary’s report and Joyce Reffett presented the treasurer’s report.

The next meeting will be Feb. 25 at 4:30 p.m. at the James B. Allen Generations Center, 32 Meadow St. Everyone 50 years of age or older is invited to attend.

If Clark County schools are closed that day for inclement weather, the meeting will be canceled.
