George Rogers Clark’s girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Thursday night as they hosted Madison Central.

“It was good. We needed a win,” GRC head coach Robbie Graham said. “We’ve been practicing pretty well. We’ve had some real knock-down, drag-out physical practices so I knew we’d have a good start. We’re glad to come out and get a win.”

The Lady Cardinals had gone through a stretch against some of the state’s top teams, including reigning state champions Ryle.

GRC opened up the game on a 15-point run before Madison Central would knock down two free throws to score their first points.

Their defense continued at that pace for the remainder of the period, only allowing one field goal from the Lady Indians in the first quarter.

After leading 28-4 heading into the second, GRC kept its high intensity on both ends of the floor to add to their lead.

Another quarter that only saw one Lady Indians’ basket gave the Lady Cardinals a 50-6 lead heading into the halftime.

GRC was able to extend their lead by holding onto the ball while on offense and taking it away while on defense. By halftime, the Lady Cards had a 24-3 margin over the Lady Indians on takeaways. They had also made more shots (18) than the Lady Indians had attempted (15) by halftime.

“We have been really working hard defensively, working hard rebounding. We’re trying to get our hands on more balls, get more deflections and more steals,” Graham said. “I felt like we did a really good job setting the tone early with our defense.”

Graham used the second half to develop his bench with a commanding lead and a running clock.

“When you have more threats on offense its harder to defend, so anytime we can get more balanced scoring its good,” Graham said. “We got some of our young kids in, they got a lot of minutes. We got to rest some of our older kids. In a game like that, we have a lot of respect for their program, we don’t ever want to disrespect anybody. So it was good to get everybody in.”

The Lady Cardinals moved to 6-4 with the win and will play again Saturday when they travel to Russell to take on the Red Devils.
