George Rogers Clark’s boys basketball team traveled to Pendleton County to take on the Wildcats Friday night.
The Cardinals head coach Josh Cook entered the matchup undefeated against the school during his Clark County tenure, even though the Wildcats had a Mr. Basketball and future Kentucky Wildcat, Dontaie Allen, on the team each season Cook has coached the Cardinals.
GRC jumped out to an early 19-11 lead by the end of the first quarter but really stepped on the gas defensively in the second.
The Cardinals enjoyed a 33-17 lead at halftime after they held the Wildcats to a six-point second quarter.
Clark County had another explosive quarter to begin the second half, but the Wildcats nearly matched them, scoring two points less, their closest quarter of the game.
But the Cardinals’ defense put together another single-digit quarter for Pendleton County in the final period to secure a 70-42 win.
The Cards’ leading scorer was Jerone Morton, who finished with 19 points. Closely behind him was Jared Wellman, who finished with 16. Lincoln Bush was the only other Cardinal to finish with double-digit points, finishing with 12.
The other two starters, Jeremiah Mundy-Lloyd and KJ Rucker, each had six points.
Sammy Hernandez was the leading scorer off the bench with five points.
Bush also had a monster day on the glass, picking up 16 rebounds for his second double-double of the year.
