The George Rogers Clark Lady Cardinals traveled to Great Crossing for their first road game of the season Saturday to take on the Warhawks.

The Lady Cards were locked in defensively from the start, allowing them to jump out to an early lead and not look back.

“Our pressure got to them and made them turn the ball over and we were able to convert on those turnovers. They had 22 turnovers and that was crucial,” GRC head coach Robbie Graham said. “We were able to get some easy baskets in transition and that really got our offense going and we relaxed a little bit and our shots started falling.”

One player who was able to lead the charge for the Cardinals defensively — and offensively — was Tyra Flowers. Flowers finished the game with a team-high four steals, and her game caught Graham’s eye.

“I want to point out Tyra Flowers. I don’t normally point out individuals, but Ty played a heck of a ballgame,” Graham said. “She had 16 points and 14 rebounds, that’s a big-time game. She was going to get it. She also had some assists too, she passed the ball well.”

Flowers’s 16 points tied fellow sophomore Trinity Gay, who was second on the team in steals, for the second-most on the team.

Senior Kennedy Igo led the Lady Cards offensively with a season-high 23 points. Igo had missed time before the season started with an injury but is coming along as the regular season gets going.

“She’s coming into form. She missed a lot of shots on opening night and I think she was kind of mad at herself,” Graham said of the Miss Basketball candidate. “She only had one full practice before we played that first game, so we’re not worried about her. She’s a little tough on herself at times, but she’s a gamer and a very tough competitor.”

Clark County cruised to a 30-point win over the first-year team in a game that allowed the Lady Cardinals to get every player off the bench.
