Clark man pleads guilty to bat assaults

A man charged with assaulting three people with a baseball bat in March agreed to serve five years in prison for the incident.
Florencio Espinoza, 27, of 27 E. Washington St., pleaded guilty Thursday in Clark Circuit Court to three counts of second-degree assault for the March 28 incident. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors amended the single count of first-degree assault to second-degree and dismissed a persistent felony offender charge.
Prosecutors recommended five years for each charge, which will run concurrently.
Espinoza also pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance in an unrelated case. He agreed to serve three years, which would run concurrently with the assault charges.
Espinoza in scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 16, 2020.
In court documents, police said the assault may have been prompted by a stolen backpack. Espinoza told police one of the three victims took the backpack and made a pass at his girlfriend. Espinoza told police he confronted the three and started swinging the bat as they approached him.
Two of the victims had broken arms and the third had facial injuries and bruises.
