What’s Happening at the Library: Merry Craftsmas

Published 5:16 pm Sunday, December 1, 2019

Now, we time travel to next weekend, because the holiday season is here and anything is possible.

What do we find when we arrive at the library next weekend? Many merry holiday crafters creating scintillating gifts, package decos and tree tchotchkes out of spools and ribbons, colorful papers and paints.

We’ve transported to the library’s annual Merry Craftmas makers marathon.

This year, Merry Craftsmas is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. The library will provide everything you need to make five new spool projects.

The projects are:

— Sweet Sewing Spools. This festive little pincushion uses a long felt ribbon on a wooden spool to keep your needles organized in a neat roll. Makes a nice gift for the crafters on your Christmas list.

— Holiday Greeting Spool. Use decorative papers and trims to transform a wooden spool into an unforgettable holiday greeting and ornament to be cherished for many holidays to come.

— Mini Birdhouse Spool Ornament. Use buttons, paper and trims to create miniature birdhouses for your tree.

— Tiny Tree Spool Ornament. Decorate a tiny tree mounted on a ribbon-decorated spool to grace your table or tree.

— Spool Gnomes. Turn a wooden spool, a couple of wooden beads and a few scraps of felt into a winsome little elf. Yes, winsome. Merry Craftsmas has always been a winsome/winsome situation.

No registration is required. Merry Craftsmas is free and open to the public.

Drop in and make one project, or bring your lunch and stay to craft as long as you like.

If you want to freestyle with materials provided, feel free. Merry Craftsmas is all about freeing your inner elf.

Once you’ve gotten into your holiday groove, head into the library’s stacks for loads of gift, decorating and cooking books.

Books about Christmas crafts and decorating are located under the call number 745594; Holiday cookbooks are located under call numbers around 641.568.

As always, if you have any questions or need help finding a particular book or information about a particular craft or cuisine ask a CCPL library elf. They are especially happy to help you this time of year.

Holiday music? Holiday videos? The library has them in abundance.

Holiday bookazines, those daydreams in print? There are sleighfulls on display tables in front of the circulation desk.

Dedicated crafters should be sure to check out the “prims” bookazines shelved on the far right-hand side of the bookazine section between videos and magazines. “Prims” are filled with magical designs, and loaded with technique tips from master crafters.

If you’re thinking of doing some holiday knitting. There is a table full of knitting books right in front of the reference desk.

You can give The Jolly Old Elf’s crew a run for their money with the things you can learn to make at the library.
