Following a loss at Lexington Catholic on Monday night, the George Rogers Clark Lady Cardinals soccer team had one more chance to gain momentum heading into the postseason.
In a matchup of 10th Region opponents, GRC looked to do just that, as they took a two-goal lead early in the game.
Senior Delaney Manning scored both of the Cardinals’ two early goals in the first 15 minutes of the match.
The Cardinals took their foot off the gas and allowed Harrison County to score three goals to take a lead into halftime.
GRC wasn’t able to get it together early in the second half, allowing another Harrison County goal to increase the Cardinal deficit to 4-2 with 17 minutes to play.
The Lady Cards showed their resiliency, and Leslie Hernandez led the way with a goal only a minute after.
Another Hernandez goal tied the game with five minutes to play.
Tied 4-4 and the clock winding to the final seconds, Allie Bush scored a Cardinal goal to give the Cards a 5-4 win, finishing the season a 14-6-1 record, best in the 10th Region.
GRC finished the season scoring 109 goals, nearly doubling the next best offense in the region, Bourbon County with 55 goals.
The Lady Cards are set to host the 39th District Tournament and hold the number one seed. Their first-round matchup is against Paris Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. at the new Cardinal Stadium. If they win, they guarantee themselves a spot in the 10th Region Tournament and would play the winner of Montgomery County and Bourbon County in the district championship game on Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
GRC went 3-0 in district play during the regular season and beat their first-round matchup Paris 10-0 on Sept. 16.
They only allowed one goal in their three games, a 5-1 win against Montgomery County. Their other district opponent, Bourbon County, fell 7-0 to the Lady Cards.
