GAME OF THE WEEK: GRC vs. Cooper — Football
Published 4:51 pm Tuesday, October 1, 2019
After suffering two losses in a row, George Rogers Clark looks to get back on track and back to a .500 record Friday night against Cooper.
Friday’s game will be the second matchup between the two teams, with the only other contest being a 48-21 Cooper victory over the Cardinals last season in the first round of the 6A playoffs.
After realignment, the two teams are no longer in the same class and have no chance of meeting in the playoffs this season, however, that doesn’t mean that this isn’t an important game.
The Cardinals find themselves on a two-game skid, needing a win to keep from falling to 2-4.
The Cardinals had great success on the ground in last season’s matchup. Azariah Israel rushed for just north of 300 yards on 35 carries, scoring each of the three Cardinal touchdowns and a two-point conversion.
GRC also returns their leading tackler from the game, Aquevion Lewis, who finished with 11 tackles and one tackle for loss in the playoff game.
Cardinals quarterback Jordan Manley will likely get more action than he did in last season’s matchup, as he was the Cards second option behind Will Henry, who threw for eight yards on 11 attempts.
Friday night’s game will also be homecoming for the Cardinals, with king and queen announced at halftime of the game.
