The George Rogers Clark girls soccer team traveled to take on the Lexington Catholic Lady Knights Monday to play their second-to-last regular season game.

The Cardinals were in for a tall task, as the Lady Knights had only allowed 16 goals through 17 games heading into the matchup.

Lexington Catholic’s defense was the difference in the game, surrendering no goals to the Cardinals.

GRC’s goalie, Carrie Stevens, had herself a busy night, picking up nine saves.

Another bright spot for the Cardinals was the return of Leslie Hernandez. It was the first game action for Hernandez since the Cardinals took on Montgomery County nearly two weeks prior. Hernandez has been nursing a knee injury that has sidelined her for seven of the team’s games this season.

Hernandez is still the team’s fourth-leading scorer even though she has missed nearly a third of the Cardinal’s games and is second on the team in goals per game.

GRC is traveling to Harrison County for their regular season finale Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. before competing in the 39th District Tournament.

The tournament will be held at GRC and the Lady Cardinals have locked up the number one seed for the tournament after finishing the season undefeated in district play and having the best overall record in the district.

Dates have not been finalized for the tournament but will run between Oct. 7-12.

The other teams in the Cardinals district are Paris (9-8-2),  Montgomery County (8-9-0) and Bourbon County (6-11-1).
