Robert D. Campbell Jr. High took on Harrison County in interim head coach Rob Howard’s second game after beating Woodford County last Thursday.
The game started rough for the Cardinals, giving up a touchdown on Harrison County’s opening drive, followed by the Thorobreds recovering their onside kick and scoring another touchdown all before RDC had one play on offense.
Down 12-0, Howard’s team didn’t give up.
“Tonight, they had no quit,” Howard said. “The ball didn’t bounce our way but they still played hard and competed.”
The Cards were able to get on the board with their first offensive possession, a 15-yard touchdown pass from Caden Spicer to Carter Maynard cut the deficit to 12-8.
A double-reverse wide receiver pass tricked the Cards on the next possession, pushing the Harrison County lead to 20-8.
RDC had an opportunity to put points on the board before halftime but had two touchdowns called back due to penalties.
The second half saw sustained drives from the Cardinal offense, but they weren’t able to put any more points on the board.
The Thorobreds scored twice in the second half to beat the Cardinals 32-8.
The seventh and eighth grade teams both have two more games scheduled, with seventh grade playing Tuesday against Bondurant and eighth grade playing Thursday against Georgetown. Both teams are scheduled to take on Bryan Station on Saturday at the new stadium at GRC.
While Howard hasn’t been the head coach all season, he still has goals for his team the rest of the way.
“I just want the kids to have fun and play football,” Howard said. “They are great kids, great athletes and great students. I want them to have a positive experience and get better for when they play at GRC.”
