George Rogers Clark’s Alex Dunaway and Allen Powe headed to Sandusky Bay this weekend to compete in the Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Lake Erie Open.
The tournament was a five-bass limit, meaning your heaviest five bass are the only ones that count, and saw 30 teams compete.
The Winchester duo finished with a weight of 15 pounds, 7 ounces, nearly an entire pound more than the second-place finishers.
Dunaway and Powe have had lots of success in their time together, finishing 11th out of 200 in the nation and 22nd out of 380 in the world in The Bass Federation tournament this summer. Both anglers were offered scholarships at the tournament.
They are also currently the FLW’s top-ranked team after their first-place finish this weekend.
GRC’s bass fishing team is hosting their own tournament this weekend at Lake Harrington. It is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21st and they expect anywhere from 60-65 boats to be on the water competing. GRC will have eight boats of two anglers in the tournament.
This is the second year hosting a tournament series, but their first year hosting this specific tournament series.
Head coach Billy Damron said that the biggest challenge the team faces is the lack of boat captains, who are 19-year olds who have passed a background check through the school, and being a non-revenue-generating team.
“It’s not like the football team having a game on Friday night,” Damron said. “We don’t get to sell tickets at the gate and have concessions. We’re very lucky to have had a lot of donations from the community, but without it, we can’t succeed.”
Damron says that they are trying to earn revenue from the tournament they are hosting, but they also want to set aside enough money for good prize packages for the kids.
“We want to have enough money to have kids come fish with us,” Damron said. “We want to give out really good rods and reels and equipment. We always set aside money for scholarships too.”
