Game of the week: GRC vs. Montgomery County — Football
Published 5:06 pm Tuesday, September 10, 2019
After picking up their first win of the season and their first win at their new stadium, George Rogers Clark looks to keep the ball rolling as they travel to Mount Sterling Friday night to take on the Montgomery County Indians.
The Indians (1-2) are in 5A and have had some tough tests to start the season. Their two losses came from Somerset, currently ranked second in 2A by the Kentucky Associated Press poll, and Greenup County, who has scored in bunches this season.
A win would be a good opportunity for the Cardinals to pick up ground on the 8th district leading Oldham County, who is set to take on a team from the state’s toughest district, DuPont Manual.
This game will also serve as a revenge game for GRC, as Montgomery County was one of the three regular season losses for the Cardinals last season, falling 31-28.
Montgomery County’s Josh Wheaton is in his senior year and, after rushing for 79 yards against GRC last year, has been rushing the ball well this year. He rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns in the Indian’s season opener.
Senior defensive back Tyler Jacobs is the key player for the Indians defense, racking up 13 tackles including five tackles for loss against Powell County.
To counter both of those players, GRC will be looking for Azariah Israel to have another big game on both sides of the ball. Against Tates Creek, Israel finished with 214 total yards of offense and two touchdowns. Israel also created havoc on the defensive end, including a big interception in the fourth quarter.
The game is at Montgomery County High School and will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
