After a much-needed win against Fleming County, the George Rogers Clark volleyball team looked to keep the momentum going as Harrison County came to town Tuesday night.

The first set was not promising for the Lady Cardinals, falling behind 7-0 to start the match.

But one message that head coach Jesse Bryson has instilled into her team is to never give up.

GRC’s Molly Robertson went to serve with her team down 16-5. She cooked up six straight points to give the Cards a little momentum.

Robertson was all over the floor, serving the ball exceptionally well and following anything that came back onto the Cardinal side of the court.

“I want to see everyone working as hard as (Molly) right now,” Bryson screamed so loud that everyone in the gym could hear.

And that’s just what the Cards did, working to get the score even at 21. It was then time for Robertson to serve again, and her serves helped give the Cards the first set win they needed against the 12th Region-leading Fillies.

The second set was more of the same, Cards falling behind early, down as many as seven points. They fought back again but eventually losing the set 25-19.

The third set is when the Cardinals finally got off to a hot start, scoring the first seven points.

But just like the Cards, Harrison County refused to give up.

They fought back to take their first lead over the Cards of the set at 20-19, and with Robertson coming up to serve for GRC, it looked as though the Cards might win this set. But three unforced errors in a row led to a 25-20 set win for Fillies and they would only need one more to close out the game.

With a back-and-forth battle throughout the fourth set, the Cards found themselves up 20-15, needing this set to stay alive. Five straight points from Robertson serving tied the game at 20.

But the Fillies once again fought back, putting the Cards back against the wall as they took a 24-20 lead.

The Cardinals, dead to rights, somehow managed to fight back to win the set 27-25.

The fifth and final set was as much of a wild ride as the rest of the game, with the Lady Cardinals holding the lead the entire set until it was tied at 13 in the first-to-15 final set. The Cards dropped the final two points of the match and weren’t able to come up with a win.

The Lady Cards are back in action Thursday night when they travel to take on Lexington Christian.
