Our View: New policy a no-brainer

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: the new policy proposed by the Clark County Health Department is really a no-brainer.

It appears most of the community agrees with us as well, considering only a handful of people attended a public forum regarding the policy Thursday night.

Of the five people present, which included a Sun reporter, two health department employees, one health board member and a civilian, no one offered any opposition to the policy, which would require restaurants and other food service establishments to post their health inspection scores for patrons to see.

The meeting was only minutes long, Sun reporter Lashana Harney revealed in her story on page A1 today.

We’re glad to see the community and local restaurant owners on board with the policy, that is more about transparency and safety than anything.

The Clark County Board of Health approved the first reading of the policy in its June meeting. The board will reconvene in the fall to consider approval of a second reading, and we feel confident that reading will pass.

With that passage, Clark Countians and those visiting local restaurants will  know ahead of ordering if they feel comfortable eating at an establishment.

While the scores are posted monthly in The Sun, having them posted in individuals restaurants will add a needed layer of transparency for customers.

It will also offer more accountability for restaurants who have violations or low scores. Likewise, it could be incentive for some places to clean up their act.
