Veterans and their families filled over a half-dozen-tables alternating in red, white and blue colors while a patriotic soundtrack chimed through the air of College Park Gym.

The free Veterans recognition luncheon sponsored by the Elk Lodge No. 2816 and Dickey’s Barbecue began at noon with a welcoming crowd.

George Merritt, a member of Elk Lodge No. 2816, assisting in serving food, said the reason for the luncheon was “To give back to the community, to give back to the veterans.”

A plethora of pulled pork, coal slaw, baked beans and more also greeted hungry guests.

Bill Witt, a World War II veteran attending the lunch, said he appreciated occasions like these.

“I never miss an event,” Witt said.

The luncheon offered veterans a chance to fraternize, which Brinda Potts, wife of one of the service members in attendance said she thought it was good for them.

“It’s wonderful for the veterans to get together and talk about their experiences,” Potts said.
