Clark County recently received a $110,000 to resurface part of the roads in the Verna Hills subdivision with asphalt using recycled tires.

The county applied for the grant from the Kentucky Energy and Environmental Cabinet in March. Clark County was one of five to receive funds for similar projects, according to the Clark County Road Department.

The county will receive about $110,000 to use 990 tons of rubber-modified asphalt on roads in the subdivision. The rubber-modified asphalt will be applied over the existing road surface and is projected to prolong the road surface’s life for several years.

The product will use crumb rubber taken from recycled tires.

The roads to receive the new overlay are Laura Drive, Verna Drive, Princeton Drive, Botts Court, Harvard Drive, Robyn Drive and Larry Court.

The program will test the surface for five years. The county is pursuing funding to resurface the remainder of roads in Verna Hills with traditional asphalt for comparison.

Clark County Road Supervisor Allan Curtis said previously that Verna Hills contained the proper amount of roads for the study, and roads in the subdivision had not been repaved in decades.

“The bottom line is we are going to be able to provide nearly an entire subdivision with roughly $110,000 in new pavement at no cost on our end,” Clark County Judge-Executive Chris Pace said in a statement.

“This is a win for both the communities that get better roadways and for the environment,” KEEC Secretary Charles Snavely said.

Paving is expected to begin later this summer.
