Conkwright Elementary School student Kayleb Becraft looked focused as he shoveled dirt aside to make room for plants in a raised garden at the front of the school.
He and dozens of his classmates took part in Conkwright’s annual spring garden kickoff Friday, tilling the soil, planting vegetables and placing their hand-painted rocks in the dirt.
Conkwright had their first harvest in June 2017. Conkwright partnered with the Clark County FFA to construct and plant the raised bed gardens in front of the school. The project was first funded by a grant through the Greater Clark Foundation.
Each year since, the students plant a variety of vegetables, including tomatoes, onions, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage before the end of school and then return during the summer break to harvest their plants.
The garden is used to not only provide fresh vegetables for students to take home, but as a teaching tool by instructors at the school.
