Mind and Body: April is National Donate Life Month

Published 7:10 pm Thursday, April 25, 2019

Every day, lives are saved and improved by the gift of life, sight and health.

Even though 145 million people in the U.S. have registered as donors, we all need to sign up.

More than 113,000 men, women and children are on the national transplant waiting list as of January 2019.

In 2018, 36,528 transplants occurred in 2018.

Currently, 20 people die each day waiting for a transplant.

We all need to register. Why?

— Ninety-five percent of U.S. adults support organ donation.

— Fifty-eight percent are signed up as donors.

— Every 10 minutes another person is added to the waiting list.

— Only three in 1,000 people die in a way that allows for organ donation.

— One donor can save eight lives.

— One person can donate up to eight lifesaving organs: heart, two lungs, liver, pancreas, two kidneys and intestines.

Signing up on the state organ donor registry means that someday you could save lives as a donor by leaving behind the gift of life.

Most states let you choose what organs and tissues you want to donate, and you can update your status at any time.

You can sign up online or in person at the circuit clerk’s driver’s license office.

Registering online takes just a few minutes at www.organdonor.gov.

All you need is identification information and your driver’s license or photo ID number.
