Volunteers for annual Earth day litter pick up downtown

More than 50 volunteers picked up about 23 bags of trash Monday during the annual Main Street Clean Sweep.

Every year, the community is invited to participate in the downtown clean up in recognition of Earth Day. The event, presented by Bluegrass Greensource and Commonwealth Credit Union, focuses on picking up litter throughout downtown.

Despite the no littering signs on the courthouse lawn, Clark County Emergency Management Director Gary Epperson said his bags were quickly filling up,  especially with cigarette butts, one of the most littered items on the planet.

Every team received trash bags, gloves and an Earth Day T-shirt. Ale-8-One also donated returnable Ale-8s for the event.
