The Clark County Board of Education approved a bid from Hammerhead Signs and Promotions for the purchase and installation of four digital marquee signs.

The signs will be installed at Robert D. Campbell Jr. High, Baker Intermediate, Strode Station Elementary and Shearer Elementary. Baker and RDC will get full color signs, while the elementary schools will receive amber-only signs to match Justice and Conkright.

The total cost for all four of the signs will be about $108,000. To reduce costs, board members opted to do away with building simulated rock wings on the side of the signs, saying that if they felt the wings were necessary in the future they could be added to an already complete sign.

The board was split 3-1 on the decision Dec. 13 with member Judy Hicks opposed to the purchase.

“That just seems so expensive for signs,” Hicks said.

Board member Gordon Parido received permission to be excused from the meeting and was not present for the vote.

Board member James Wilson moved to acquire and install the signs, saying that he believes the information they communicate to the public is beneficial.

“When I drove by that sign every day going to GRC, it’s good information when you see it,” Wilson said.

The Board also discussed the possibility of moving the sign for Baker further down Martin Luther King Jr. Drive closer to Shoppers Drive in order to increase its visibility.
