On Nov. 9, Claude Shaw was awarded a Quilt of Valor in honor and recognition of his service to the country.

Since 2003, Quilts of Valor has vowed “to cover all those service members and veterans wounded physically or psychologically with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor,” according to its website. Shaw’s quilt, titled “Stars at Dusk,” was pieced together by Barbara Farrell and quilted by Nancy Cann.

Shaw said he was honored to be selected.

“It’s called the Quilt of Valor to honor those touched by war,” Shaw said.

Shaw, 82, served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1979. Shaw is initially from western Tennessee but has lived in Winchester for more than 40 years.

He completed two tours in Vietnam as well as tours in Turkey and Singapore. Shaw also spent time in Hawaii and Kansas among others. Shaw served of his time in the army as a helicopter pilot and has received numerous awards and honors because of it.

Honors include a Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and more.
