Suspect in July 3 pursuit waives case to grand jury

A Winchester man charged with stealing a car and leading police on a pursuit waived his charges to the grand jury Wednesday.
Keontez Hazley, 28, was arrested July 3 for theft by unlawful taking (auto), first-degree fleeing or evading police (two counts), failure to illuminate headlamps, reckless driving, resisting arrest and diving on a suspended operator’s license.
Wednesday in Clark District Court, the judge reduced the theft charge to a lower felony based on the value of the vehicle, and amended his bond to a $5,000 surety.
According to Winchester Police, Hazley allegedly stole a Toyota Highlander from Speedway, 1480 W. Lexington Ave., at 4:57 a.m. July 3. The vehicle had been left running and unlocked. Witnesses saw the vehicle traveling toward Interstate 64 and officers pursued it into Fayette County.
In court documents, the officers wrote the pursuit reached Newtown Pike, when the driver stopped suddenly and fled on foot. Hazley was later arrested.
Hazley admitted to the theft and fleeing from the police, according to the citation.
