The Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark counties will host a community breakfast in Clark County for the first time beginning 8:30 a.m. Oct. 14 at First Fire off Lexington Avenue.

Habitat representative Kendel Arthur said the breakfast is a “friend-raiser” for the organization, which completes several projects in Winchester, Richmond and Berea each year.

“The breakfast is free for whoever wants to attend,” Arthur said.

Traditionally, the community breakfast has been hosted in Madison County, but this year the organization is having two separate breakfasts, dedicating one entirely to Clark County. Arthur said the move is symbolic of the organization’s desire to become more active in the Winchester Area.

The breakfast will feature remarks from Habitat leadership in the service area, as well as a testimonial from someone who has benefited from a Habitat project.

A major announcement that will come out of the breakfast will be the planned opening of a Habitat ReStore and resource center in Clark County.

“We received a $30,000 matching grant from the Clark County Community Foundation,” Arthur said. “In addition to the ReStore, there will be office space where people can come to pay bills and handle other things that they would have had to travel to Madison County for before.”

Those in attendance can also sign up as volunteers for the Habitat, either putting themselves on a list for upcoming projects in the area or volunteering for current building projects.

Arthur said a typical building project for the Habitat utilizes about 150 volunteers, and the organization is always looking for more people to help complete projects.

The Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark counties does about one building project a year in Richmond, Winchester and Berea and several repair projects. The group’s mission is largely based around creating affordable housing for those in need.
