The 2025 George Rogers Clark High School baseball and softball seasons continued this week with mixed results.
The Cards, having won four of their last five entering the week, took on the Montgomery County Indians on Monday, April 14.
They got out to an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before the Indians were able to get their first out.
GRC was led on offense by sophomores Abrahm Howard and Abe Mullins, who each delivered a pair of RBIs.
However, it was sophomore pitcher Myles Frick who stood out the most.
Over the course of five innings, Frick threw a no-hitter in one of the most dominant performances of the year thus far.
“I was really hyped up because this obviously it’s our district rival and this is a big opportunity for me to get to throw in our first district game,” said Frick. “My thoughts going into it were just [to] attack the zone and let my defense work.”
“I thought we came out with great energy [and] great passion,” said Head Coach Eddie Brooks. “[The] kids were ready to play…and they met the challenge today.”
Following victories over Bourbon County and Montgomery County during a rematch in Mount Sterling, the Cards (12-8) returned to Winchester for a Friday evening matchup against Scott County.
Despite leading 5-4 entering the seventh inning, the Cards were unable to hold Scott County off the scoreboard, and ultimately fell 8-5.
Following a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Powell County at home on Monday, April 21, the Cards’ season continues on Saturday, April 26, with a Saturday doubleheader against defending 12th Region champion West Jessamine at 1:30 and a game against Lafayette at 4:00 p.m.
The Lady Cards were also in action this week, though they hit what some might consider their first slump of the season.
With an 11-1 record, they took on defending 10th Region champion Montgomery County in Winchester.
Yet victory eluded them, as the Lady Indians broke away for a convincing 16-1 win.
Twenty-four hours later, on Wednesday, April 16, the Lady Cards were back in action.
While playing Paris, they burst out early and often and walked away with a 19-4 victory in just three innings.
The team was led by senior Alyssa Webb, eighth grader Zyniia Tichenor, and sophomore Jordyn Abner, who each had four hits while the latter had four RBIs.
Freshman Kyleigh Chestnut delivered four RBIs as well.
“I think they had a lot of focus. Paris is a good ball club,” said Head Coach Matt Puckett. “We just happened to hit the ball well and got some timely hits.”
GRC also suited up for matchups with Pendleton County in Falmouth and at home against Tates Creek.
Yet the results were different, as they fell to the Lady Cards and Lady Commodores by scores of 9-1 and 7-2.
“Sometimes, it takes a while to put a puzzle together,” said Puckett, noting that a variety of lineups and more were being utilized. “Our goal is to put it together by May, and by that time play our best softball going into the postseason.”
The Lady Cards are back in action with a game against Bourbon County on the road on Tuesday, April 24, starting at 6:00 p.m.
