Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

For good reason, much talk of sports at George Rogers Clark High School lately has surrounded basketball.

However, there’s more reason for excitement as the year heads toward spring.

Both the baseball and softball seasons have begun.

Under new head coach Matt Puckett, who led the Montgomery County Lady Indians to a 10th Region Championship last season, the team has looked to improve on last year’s 8-24 record.

So far, results have been positive.

The Lady Cards are halfway to that win total, starting 4-0.

They showed adversity by beating Conner High School (1-4) in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, overcoming a two-run deficit with three run-scoring hits in the bottom of the seventh for a dramatic 8-7 victory when the Lady Cougars were just one out away from victory.

“We’ve talked about, since I took the job, just trying to be resilient and overcome adversity,” said Puckett. “It wasn’t the prettiest game…[but] they did a great job of coming back, so I’m proud of how they showed resilience.”

The game-winning hit was delivered on a single by right fielder Alyssa Webb.

“[It was] really just a team effort,” she said. “My girls in front of me got on base and they had tied up the game, so I got up there. I knew I had to do my part too.”

Also contributing were the likes of seniors Aniya McIntyre and Addison Wilson, with the former reaching base multiple times and the latter hitting a pair of doubles.

The Lady Cards’ other three victories came against Lewis County, Breathitt County, and in the second game of a doubleheader against Conner.

On the boys’ side, baseball has shown some success.

After initial losses to defending 14th Region Champion Estill County and Whitley County – who won the state title in 2023 – the Cards came home to play against Perry County Central on Friday, March 21.

After initially leading 4-0, thanks partly to an RBI and run scored from sophomore Jacob Todd, GRC ran into some trouble.

The Commodores (2-3), led by multiple RBI doubles from sophomore Tate Watts, battled back for a 5-4 lead.

However, like the Lady Cards would do less than 24 hours later, the Cards rallied.

Scoring four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning, including a go-ahead single by sophomore Gunnar Martin – who had earlier made a defensive play in left field worthy of being shown on a highlight reel – the Cards took the lead and held on for an 8-5 victory.

They gained their second victory of the season on Saturday with a convincing 10-1 win over Greenup County.

“It feels good to finally get a win on the board, and we had a lot of momentum,” Martin said.

“We came out early, swung [the] bats well, then they answered,” said Head Coach Eddie Brooks, complimenting Perry County Central. “We found a way to answer it back late in the game.”

Multiple runs from GRC came as the result of sacrifice hits, including an RBI groundout and sacrifice fly.

“That’s part of our [batting practice] routine. We do…situational hitting rounds,” he said. “That’s what showed up for us today.”

Both teams continue their season this upcoming week.

The Lady Cards (4-0) begin with a home matchup against Bryan Station (3-0)  on Tuesday, March 25, at 6:00 p.m.

The Cards (2-2), following a Monday, March 24, home matchup against Powell County (0-2) at 6:00 p.m., will continue their season with another home game against Lexington Christian (2-2) on Wednesday, March 26, at 6:00 p.m.
