NOTE: The original headline for this story stated the fundraiser was for individuals who lost their boats. It was specifically for Old Habits Boat Dock.

When inclement weather strikes, unfortunate side effects often occur.

However, community spirit can often lead to positive action.

Such was the case on Saturday, March 8, when a fundraiser took place to support individuals whose boats were lost at the Old Habits boat dock in February, located at 3685 Four Mile Road.

The dock itself was lost due to flooding in February.

In late February, news arose that many of the boats had been swept away.

“I am so heart broken [sic] for my son and [sic] law and my nephew. They loved these boats so much. They put so much into these and their wives and kids did too,” said local citizen Teresa Haggard, who noted that her son-in-law’s boat was later found but her nephew’s was not. “In the summer time they lived on these. I’m sure they will get another boat but these [were] like family to them.”

It was later suggested that some of the boats had traveled quite some distance.

“”Last we heard, there [were] a few of the pontoons that actually made it to the Ohio River and kept on going,” said local citizen Brandon Tackett.

Boats were also found in counties outside of Winchester.

Following the unfortunate news, Dale Hatton and Barbara Dale – both Clark County citizens – decided they wanted to help.

They spearheaded an effort to raise money, with the results being fruitful.

Their fundraiser for Old Habits brought in $5,000, namely due to over 60 items being present that were sent in from local businesses and individuals for a 50/50 silent auction.

These included gift cards to local restaurants such as Woody’s, South Main Grocery, and Lucky Dogs, as well as a free oil change from Paynter Tire, gift basket from Southwind Golf Course and The View at Southwind Restaurant, and a $250 gift card to Lowe’s that was gifted by Precision Services owner Quinton Stevenson.

It took place at the Winchester Elks Lodge #2816, located at 255 Shoppers Drive.

The event also featured a variety of musical acts, such as Justin Ratcliff, Tommy Lee Rector, Hannah Mae Rector, Them Lasses with Old Dogs, Lark Watts, and Tyler Ray Miniard and the State Line.
