The sports scene for George Rogers Clark High School teams has been particularly active lately.
During the weekend of February 15, the Lady Cards’ wrestling squad made the most of its opportunity to shine.
At Walton-Verona High School, the team competed at the Region 3 tournament with junior Bailey Fletcher and 8th grader Danica Patrick competing on the mat.
“As a coach, I can not ask for a better two individuals to build our [girls’] team around,” said Head Coach Alex Wright. “Both of these girls have progressed leaps and bounds throughout this past season and we are extremely proud of how both ladies faced adversity…[t]hese [l]adies embody the toughness, hard work, and dedication that we [strive] to promote at GRC wrestling.”
After securing two pins, a finals match, and a spot in 2025 KHSAA Girls’ State Championship on February 27th, Fletcher – who wrestles at 120-lbs. – placed 2nd.
“Overall, it was a great weekend for Bailey,” Wright added. “We know where we made mistakes and we now have…[time] to focus on those corrections before the state tournament on Feb. 27.”
Patrick, who wrestles at 114-lbs., placed 6th and fell short of qualifying for Regionals.
However, the day was not without success.
She won by technical fall in her quarterfinal match, and – despite falling in a highly competitive semifinals matchup – showed tenacity by continuing to wrestle after reinjuring a broken nose from earlier this season.
Coach Wright added that there’s reason for enthusiasm regarding the future.
“I am beyond excited with the potential we have to grow as a women’s wrestling team in Clark County and I know there are more ladies like the two that are already on our team. We just have to find them!” Coach Wright added. “The future is bright and we have one more year with Danica and Bailey both at the helm, which should be very special!”
Continuing their season, GRC wrestling will participate in the boys’ regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22, at East Jessamine High School.
