The Clark County Fire Department has long served the community from its location on Barnes Drive.
While continuing to operate from the same location, it will also expand its operations.
Station 2 was recognized at 255 Tierney Way during a ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 15.
“Today marks a historic event for us,” said Clark County Fire Department Chief Steve Asbury. “This has been a plan of the Clark County Fire Department for a long time.”
A fire study completed in 2019 included multiple bullet points – with CCFD having completed six of seven to date.
Among other suggestions, the study recommended multiple new fire stations.
Saturday was a coming to fruition of that ambition.
Chief Asbury explained its dimensions and the positive impact.
“This new station has 8,000 square feet. It has about 2500 [feet] of livable space,” he said. “We’re going to put in a new door…so we can operate two trucks out of [one] side…we’re hoping to move our headquarters to this station because our other station has become cramped.”
A large amount of thanks went out to Ron Tierney.
“He just called one day and said, Chief, I know you’re looking for another fire station…I may have a suitable location,” Asbury said. “This building was just here, and we felt that [it] was a good fit for our community.”
During the ceremony, which included several local luminaries and CCFD staff, speakers included Magistrates Mark Miller and Ernest Pasley and retired Clark County Fire Department Chief Mac McGever.
“As a citizen and a representative of Clark County in general, I just want to thank the Fire Department for doing such a fabulous job in our town,” Miller said. “I also want to thank the officers who are highly skilled and for passing the knowledge on to the younger people.”
“I want to thank Chief [Asbury] [and] all the guys that worked with me…I see a lot of young men standing in the back. You should be very proud to see this day [that] has been a long time coming,” McGever added. “Looking at the equipment that you have these days, [it’s] top-notch.”
A local fire committee comprised of individuals, including Magistrate Chris Davis, played an essential role in the project’s development.
“[During] my first term on the [Fiscal] Court, we really had made the commitment to buy new equipment to replace aging equipment, and we did. We [also] needed the space for it. We needed a space for the additional firefighters,” he said. “It’s really encouraging, and it’s a great feeling…I hope the community can understand the great value we have here in this building. It is a very nice facility.”
While the current facility is set to cover the northwest portion of Clark County, including an area featuring three mobile home parks, hopes are high that there will be other additional stations to be operated by the Clark County Fire Department.
“Thankfully, we’re not finished completing our vision,” Asbury said. “Hopefully…in the near future, we’ll also put another fire station out somewhere in the southwest part of the county. My current vision is to build a station that covers each corner of the county.”
