An incident near the 200 block of Boone Avenue on Wednesday, October 31st, led to a temporary soft lockdown at both Robert D. Campbell Junior High School and Clark County Preschool.

The following information was later conveyed on the Facebook page of the Winchester Police Department:

At 12:55pm [sic], WPD received a call regarding shots fired in the area of South Burns and Euclid Avenue. Officers responded and secured a perimeter to allow for a search of the suspects. During the search, our partners with the Clark County Public Schools and the CCPS Police Department initiated certain lockdown procedures at schools in the area out of an abundance of caution.

At no time were any shots fired on school property, nor were any suspects on school property during this event. WPD and CCPS Police Department assisted local schools with release of students to their parents until the situation was deemed safe.

At approximately 1:56pm [sic], an hour after the initial call for service, WPD had tracked and located 3 subjects, along with a firearm. Those subjects are currently detained and the investigation into the initial call is ongoing. All schools that were placed on lockdown have since lifted their lockdown and have resumed normal operations.”

Speaking later, Clark County Public Schools Superintendent Dustin Howard spoke of the matter.

“We weren’t concerned about…things happening in the schools but we worked collaboratively with the Winchester Police [Department] because of an event they were working,” he said. “Our job is to keep our kids safe and sometimes that means being overly precautious. We appreciate WPD and everyone for working [with] us and understanding. Our first priority is student safety.”

Winchester Police Department Chief James Hall also commented on the matter

“Officers responded and spoke to several witnesses that were able to give us a clothing description of [the] subjects,” he said. “We were able to locate three subjects who are now in custody…Later on, we assisted the school police in getting the kids and parents out of the preschool. The [school resource officers] did everything on the lockdown side.”

No injuries or evidence of property damage took place as a result of the incident.
