Leeds Center for the Arts and Hall Coffee & Social Club are collaborating for a new event in Winchester.

As stated in a news release, Leeds Center for the Arts will have the first-ever “Book Club Happy Hour” at the Hall Coffee and Social Club – located at 17 S. Main Street – on Monday, September 30th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The multipurpose occasion seeks to introduce Clark County audiences to numerous regional authors, as well as celebrate the centennial of legendary writer Truman Capote, who would be celebrating his 100th birthday. All authors have been published by Rabbit House Press. Admission is free, and a portion of food, drink, and book sales will go to Leeds Center for the Arts – located at 37 N. Main Street. 

“We are primarily a theater organization,” said event organizer and Leeds Director of Development Bo List, “but all plays and musicals start with the written word, and we have some tremendous writers in Central Kentucky and Appalachia. We wanted to shine a spotlight on our literary artists for a change. And what better way to throw a book party for southern artists than on Truman Capote’s 100th birthday?”

 Having written such works as “In Cold Blood” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, Capote is often regarded as one of the 20th century’s most influential literary voices. A recent miniseries on the network FX titled “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans” focused on the author’s later years and complicated social entanglements, for which he was notorious. 

The event will combine some mixing and mingling with the area’s bibliophiles and bookworms along with readings from the featured authors. Among them are Robby Henson (“Loud Water”), Mike Wilson (“Arranging Deckchairs on the Titanic”), Elizabeth Beck (“Dancing on the Page”), Kyle Alvey (“On Low Gap Road”), Kevin Lane Dearinger (“Bad Sex in Kentucky”), and Rabbit House Publisher Erin Chandler, who is scheduled to read from her latest book “Bluegrass Sons: A True Crime Memoir.” 

The “Book Club Happy Hour” will begin with unique signature cocktails and a chance to meet the authors, followed by brief readings from the featured works, and concluding with discussion about the books and signing with the authors.
