Social media comments drew the attention of Clark County Public Schools parents, staff, and others on Thursday morning to potential threats.

Thankfully, swift action was taken in responding to the matter, which appears largely remedied at this time.

Clark County Public Schools Superintendent Dustin Howard sent out the following email addressed to Clark County Families:

“We were made aware of comments early this morning circulating on social media that referenced potential threats. Our School Resource Officers, Winchester Police Department, and school administration promptly conducted a thorough investigation, and no credible threats have been identified. Through the investigation, the Winchester Police Department has determined that the potential threat originated out of Winchester, Virginia. However, through circulation, this made its way to Winchester, Kentucky and has been shared with much of our community. Although the threat has been deemed non credible, we will remain vigilant throughout the day, with increased police presence and additional safety measures in place. The safety and security of our students and staff always remain a top priority.

We remain committed to transparent communication with our school community and will continue to prioritize the well-being of our students and staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your student’s schools. Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep our schools safe.”

An earlier message had been sent out to parents by George Rogers Clark High School Principal Luke Toy, with other local schools also addressing the matter through their social media pages.

Later, in the afternoon, Winchester Police Department also put out a statement.

“The Winchester Police Department wishes to address the community regarding recent social media information concerning a potential threat to local schools. We want to reassure the public that a thorough and comprehensive investigation has been conducted.
In response to the situation, WPD collaborated closely with law enforcement agencies, Clark County Public Schools, and Snapchat’s security team. Our investigation has determined that the Snapchat post in question originated from, and referred to, Winchester, Virginia. The post was disseminated until it reached a Snapchat user in our jurisdiction, who then shared it locally. Consequently, the post went viral, causing widespread concern in our city.
As a precautionary measure, WPD, in coordination with the CCPS Police Department and other agencies, ensured a visible presence at student drop-off points this morning and implemented additional patrols throughout the school day.
Our detectives have made contact with the local source of the shared social media post and are actively investigating. At this time, we do not believe there is any validity to the threat or that it pertains to our city or schools.
WPD remains committed to working with all community partners on matters of public safety. The protection of your children and our community is our top priority.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation.”
