Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Last year, long-time George Rogers Clark High School enthusiast Mike Rogers took over the school’s girls golf program.

In his second season at the helm, Rogers looks forward to what lies ahead.

“Just like with any other season, you hope to see your girls get better as the season goes on, “ he said. “I feel like we’ve done that!”

On Monday, July 22, the year officially began with the GRC Cardinal Classic at Winchester Country Club.

Officially, the regular season portion of their schedule concludes on September 24.

However, if all goes according to plan, their time on the course will be far from over.

“Our goals are to qualify for the All-State Championship, which is a two day event in Lexington,” Rogers added, with the dates scheduled for the weekend of October 10.

Presently, the team’s schedule – during which they’ll participate in both regular and invitational tournaments – includes stiff competition from the likes of Sacred Heart, Madison Central, Frederick Douglass, and more.

“We try to play a high-profile schedule,” Rogers said.

The 13-player roster features five seniors – Josie Belcher, Cassi Lowe, PK Palmer, Madelyn Settles, and Alexis Totty.

Many of the players – including Lowe and Settles – are also multi-sport athletes involved with other teams this fall.

However, that has not stopped athletes – including 8th grader Molly Claire Wasson and junior and first-year player Jenna Wellman – from shining.

“Molly Claire Wasson has played in all our tournaments and has the lowest scoring average…Jenna Wellman has played in seven [tournaments],” Rogers said. “Wasson has shot 89 for her career low score in a tournament. Wellman has been a pleasant surprise becoming our second leading average scorer.”

Rogers hopes others will continue to support the program as time moves ahead.

“We have some great young kids here in Clark County,” he said. “I’ve been blessed to be around some of these good kids…they’re just fun to be around.”
