After months of practice and preparation, the George Rogers Clark High School football team will soon begin competition with a scrimmage at Corbin on Friday, August 16, and a home opener against Central Hardin on Friday, August 23.
Many in Winchester were introduced to the team this past week.
On Tuesday, August 6, the team hosted the “Countdown to Kickoff Media Day” at Cardinal Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m.
“The Boosters came up with it. It was their idea, and they put it together. They just said, ‘Hey, do you care if we do it?’ and I [said], ‘no,’” said George Rogers Clark High School Head Football Coach Joe Chirico. “They wanted it to be as big as possible, and I’m super proud of all the hard work…”
With many students, family members, and fans seated in the bleachers, GRC football coach Joe Chirico addressed the crowd early on and thanked them for their attendance and dedication to the team.
“I love being a part of the community,” he said. “That’s what this team is. This team is Clark County.”
Cheer and dance teams were individually named and performed for the live crowd, as they will be part of this upcoming season.
Shortly after, Mallory Jones sang the national anthem, and announcer Ken Howard delivered some words, and it was time to introduce the players and coaches of this year’s team.
They came out of a tunnel and lined up at approximately midfield. The crowd named and applauded each, including the seniors and captains.
Later, many players would provide autographs for the GRC enthusiasts in attendance, many of whom were young kids.
One of the players to do so was senior Camahni “Mahni” John, who returns as both a wide receiver and defensive back.
“It’s better for the community and it’ll bring everybody together,” he said. “I’ve been having fun seeing smiles on people’s faces and things like that.”
In terms of media, the event featured a lot.
Eppic Films appeared to take video, while From Corner2Corner Podcast broadcast the event live.
Open attractions such as a bounce house and free food, video highlights of last year’s accomplishments, sponsor spotlights, and more were also available.
A coin toss captain contest also occurred, with Howard announcing the winner.
At the evening’s conclusion, it was clear that enthusiasm for the 2024 season is high.
Asked what he looks forward to, Chirico responded.
“Just watching us compete,” he said. “I love to see that.”
