The Kentucky Sheriffs’ Boys & Girls Ranch can be found in Marshall County, located in the far western portion of the Commonwealth. 

However, that didn’t stop some Winchester youth from heading out for a good time. 

To coincide with the opening of the ranch’s 49th camping season earlier this summer, a group from Clark County – Karter Townsend, Jaxsen Cundiff, Ryan Disel, and Jayden Rowlett – served as attendees. 

As stated in a news release from the Kentucky Sheriffs’ Boys & Girls Ranch, the camp – serving both boys and girls in alternative weeks – runs throughout June and July. 

The Boys & Girls Ranch is a non-profit organization, serving the youth of the Commonwealth through a camping program geared toward building self-esteem while teaching them to have respect for themselves, others and law enforcement professionals. The camp is free to campers, thanks to dedication and support from Sheriffs, members, and contributors. The costs of serving the children is approximately $500 per week per child. 100% of donations benefit the camp. 

“Campers enjoy the regular camp activities such as arts & crafts, nature, sports, swimming, fishing, archery [and more],” said Kentucky Sheriffs’ Boys & Girls Ranch Executive Director Jerry Wagner, noting there are many other similar programs in the area. “All in all, it is a week filled with fun and learning and our hope is for the campers to create a lifetime of memories during their stay, as well as learn the value of respect and other life skills.” 

Along with attendees from Clark County, the camp on its opening week received individuals from the following counties: Caldwell, Campbell, Edmonson, Hancock, Hopkins, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, Shelby, Simpson, Trigg and Warren. 

Clark County Deputy Sheriff Mark Craycraft was also present. 

“On behalf of the campers and staff, we send our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped – not only this year, but since our inception,” Wagner added. “Were it not for all of you, we would not be able to continue to make a difference in the children’s lives and your support is greatly appreciated.”
