With a 2022 state championship win, 2023 state runner-up finish, and multiple region and district championships, George Rogers Clark High School head basketball coach Josh Cook has become well known throughout the state. 

He decided to make the most of it by teaching younger generations. 

Utilizing both GRC Arena and the school’s auxiliary gym, Coach Josh Cook’s Boys Basketball Camp took place on Wednesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 20. 

“It’s a lot of skill work [and] a lot of individual attention from some guys that have played at a high level,” Cook said. “I’m very thankful to have a chance to run a camp.” 

Open to kids from fourth to eighth grade with a maximum of 80 boys allowed, skill development took place through a number of different drills. 

Among them were a dribble and score drill, hot shot. half-court 3 on 3, and more. 

Thus, as with typical games, competitiveness was a feature. 

Yet that’s not all. 

Along with skill development came attitude and mindset development. 

Plus – if looking around the gymnasium – the event featured a who’s who of current and former Winchester talent serving as assistant coaches. 

Current players included Maddox Campbell. Eli Craig, Montez Gay and Chase Pace. 

Three members of the starting five from GRC’s state-championship winning team – Jerone Morton, Aden Slone, and Tanner Walton – returned to Winchester for the event. 

All three currently play at the collegiate level. 

Reshaun Hampton – a valuable sixth man from that state-championship winning team who is committed to play at Tennessee Wesleyan University – was also present. 

“It’s actually kind of fun…getting to work with little kids…it’s kind of nice to give back to them,” Hampton said. “We can teach them…by mostly working on their form shooting and stuff like that.” 

Former players also include Jordan Graham and Trey James, who played for Coach Cook during his previous stint at Mercer County High School. 

Certainly not least, athletes Trevon Faulkner – a Mercer County native named 2018 Kentucky Mr. Basketball who helped lead Northern Kentucky University to the NCAA tournament – plus GRC graduate and former UK basketball player Brennan Canada appeared and served as guest speakers. 

“It’s exciting,” Cook said. “[It] makes me really proud.”
