Two rounds of wintry weather brought snow to Winchester and Clark County on Monday and Tuesday.
According to a post on the Clark County Road and Solid Waste Department’s Facebook page, the area saw an accumulation of around two and a half inches.
Road crews were out treating streets between bursts of powder for a period of over 21 hours and put down 175 tons of rock salt, according to Clark County Road Supervisor Allan Curtis. Complicating matters was the fact that one of the department’s trucks ran off the road and two spreaders were out of commission as well.
Cold than normal temperatures were also a bone for the road department.
With temperatures ranging from the single digits to the teens, road salt was slower to work but sunshine during the day on Tuesday helped.
However, Curtis said that most rural roads were passable but cautioned motorists to travel at around 35-miles-per-hour. Most state highways and Interstate 64 were passable by early Tuesday as well.
Due to the hazardous road conditions, Clark County Public Schools were on an NTI day on Tuesday. The district was closed on Monday due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Temperatures and road conditions also caused Winchester Municipal Utilities to cancel trash collection on Tuesday. Those with Tuesday pick-up were advised that uncollected trash would be picked up next week.
With temperatures forecast to stay below freezing until Thursday several warming shelters are currently open to the public.
The Recovery Center, located at 37 South Main St., is open from 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. and has televisions, snacks, coffee and board games.
Those needing overnight accommodations will be transported to the Beacon of Hope Shelter at 5:30 p.m.
Beacon of Hope will provide dinner and breakfast, a place to sleep, one load of laundry and transportation back to The Recovery Center at 9 a.m. the next day.
More snow is forecasted for the area Thursday night into Friday morning, with minor accumulation expected. Temperatures are expected to be back in the 40s by next Monday.
