State-bound: GRC girls’ soccer captures 10th Region title

The George Rogers Clark High School Lady Cardinals soccer team is on its way to state for the first time since 2019.
On Thursday night at Cardinal Stadium in Winchester, the host Lady Cards (11-6-3) defeated the defending 10th Region champion Bishop Brossart Lady ‘Stangs (14-7-2) by a 5-3 score.
GRC scored first-half goals from Reese Patrick and Madison Stapleton to take an early 2-0 lead.
Brossart narrowed the deficit to 2-1 with less than one minute remaining in the opening half.
They tied the game at 2-2 following another goal with 34:39 remaining in the second half.
Later, the Cards would regain the lead following another goal by Patrick that came with 17:54 left.
The team scored once again on a goal by Ella Vanhooser with 14:30 remaining, and a final goal by Cassie Lowe with 8:14 remaining gave the Lady Cards a 5-2 lead.
Brossart would score once more on a penalty kick with 6:12 remaining but could get no closer.
In addition to goals by Patrick (2), Stapleton, Vanhooser, and Lowe, assists came from Patrick, Vanhooser, Stapleton, and Laney Frazier.
Fans will not have to travel far to support the Lady Cards in the state tournament. They will face the 9th Region champion at Cardinal Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 17th, at 7:30 p.m.
Cooper (14-6-2) and Notre Dame (18-3-2) face off for the 9th Region Championship on Saturday.
