Like many generations, the 1990s offers some unique styles that those growing up during the era will remember.
On Tuesday at Legacy Grove Park, individuals can live them out again.
As part of its Legacy Nights Series for July, a 1990s-inspired costume contest will occur on Tuesday, July 11.
While the concert takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. per usual, the contest will start at 5:30 p.m., with winners to be announced at 6:15 p.m.
“The 90s were a very, very diverse time in our history in terms of what people wore,” said Deborah Jackson, the executive director of Legacy Greenscapes. “Depending on where you were in the 1990s or where you wish you had been, you can dress up. We’re really excited about that.”
A non-profit group, Legacy Greenscapes operates Legacy Grove Park and makes the Legacy Nights Concert Series possible.
The 1990s included a variety of fashionable trends, including bomber jackets, scrunchies, plaid skirts and flannel shirts, tracksuits and ripped jeans.
Thus far, the contest has garnered some popularity on social media.
For many, Jackson states that it will bring back positive memories.
“You immediately have a connection to that,” she added. “That’s what we’re finding on social media, is that people are immediately connecting to this idea of [the] 90s costume contest. We’ll see what we get. We hope people will participate.”
Prizes for first, second, and third-place winners will be awarded.
Keeping with the theme, those who show up will be treated to a concert by NVRMND.
A 1990’s rock cover band, the group itself was named – though spelled slightly differently – for the album “Nevermind” by Nirvana.
Led by the late Kurt Cobain, Nirvana is considered one of the most influential bands of its time.
“When we announced [NVRMND], I think they got the [largest] response,” Jackson said.
While food trucks like Bell on Wheels and Cookies and Cream will continue being present, newer options such as Mac A Tude and Boston’s Way will appear.
The former, making its first appearance, provides different macaroni and cheese options, including barbecue, buffalo chicken, bacon, and more.
Boston’s Way – a “taste of New England” – provides food items, including numerous cheesesteaks.
The Legacy Nights Series will continue through October.
So far, 2023 has proven to be a productive year.
“I think the quality of our bands and the draw of the bands has increased,” Jackson said. “We’ve had great weather. It hasn’t been too hot. Finally, and most importantly, our sponsors and our vendors have stepped up. They realize how many people come and can get [the] word out about their business.”
