“Free” might be one of my favorite words in the English language, along with “love” and “reading.” (Incidentally, onomatopoeia is also a favorite word of mine, but for entirely different reasons). But “free” might just be my favorite word. Not only does it describe the concept of freedom, which is important, but it also describes “free stuff,” which is something most people can get behind.
The library is all about free stuff. Thanks to the library, patrons can read a book or watch a movie without having to pay for said book or movie through Barnes & Noble or Amazon. We also offer free services like faxing and notary services.
But during our Summer Reading Program, there are plenty of opportunities for free stuff. For our Adult Summer Reading Program, you can earn a chance to win one of our fabulous prize bundles, such as our self-help and cooking bundles, just by reading books, watching movies, or just using the library. Kids also have a chance to earn free stuff, whether it’s getting a free book by completing your log or being in the running for their own fabulous prize bundles.
The library is also a free place to gather, so come to the library and enjoy some of our fabulous programs this week.
Whatever your interest in the clouds, cloud spotting might be one of the most leisurely hobbies to take up and a nice way to reconnect with the natural world around you. Join the Leaning @ the Library Potluck with special guest Andy Gary as we learn a bit about clouds – how they form, how to identify types of clouds we see, and perhaps what they may tell us. Registration is required, so register for this program through our Evanced system or by calling the library at 744-5661. You can attend the potluck at 6:15 (be sure to bring a dish!) or just attend the program, which starts at 7.
This week’s Kentucky Picture Show, premiering Wednesday, June 7 at 2 p.m., tells the story of a young Greg Laurie being raised by his struggling mother, Charlene, in the 1970s in sunny southern California. Inadvertently, Laurie meets Lonnie Frisbee, a charismatic hippie street preacher, and Pastor Chuck Smith, who have thrown open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to a stream of wandering youth. What unfolds becomes the most significant spiritual awakening in American history. Snacks will be provided.
This Saturday, June 10, the library is celebrating all things yarn! Join us on the front lawn. All fiber arts are welcome. Bring a project to work on and a chair. (In case of rain, we will meet in the periodicals section of the library.) You can also join us in the Rosemary Brooks room to swap yarn you no longer want. Bring in yarn (doesn’t have to be an entire skein) and swap with other fiber crafters for new-to-you yarn.
The library is also hosting a book signing for Kentucky sportswriter and author Jamie H. Vaught. Titled “Forever Crazy About the Cats: An Improbable Journey of a Kentucky Sportswriter Overcoming Adversity”, this is Vaught’s sixth book, which includes numerous UK stories and interviews. This book is also part memoir about Vaught’s long, adventurous career of covering the Wildcats in basketball and football while overcoming personal adversity — a devastating hearing loss since birth. This library event will take place on Saturday, June 10, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. in our periodicals section.
While our Pop-Up Book Sale isn’t free, it’s still an absolute bargain. It begins on Saturday, June 10 at 10 a.m. We give you a bag, and you fill it up for only $3! DVDs are only $1.
