The Library’s first art exhibit of 2022 is “New Year Art,” up now in the reference section.

It features paintings, papier mache, mixed-media constructions, collage, needlework, knitting, and a button encrusted walking stick by three very fine, very different Clark County artists, Adra Fisher, SueZ Early, and Ryan Case. All three are all self-taught. Each has their own unique style? Many styles?

No style? Great aesthetic intuitions and propensities to play? That sounds right.
This show is colorful, and subdued, representative and surreal, celebratory and tragic. A famous Proust misquote (I know it’s famous because I saw it on a Mary Englebreit card) is: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new sights, but in looking with new eyes.”

What Proust actually wrote (paraphrased) was “The only true voyage of discovery[is]to behold the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others.”

The works of Ryan Case, Suez Early, and Adra Fisher will allow you to see through the eyes of three talented local artists. After
putting up this show I felt euphoria, and apricity even though night had fallen. (Apricity is a
great word for this time of year. Look it up.)

“New Year Art” is a show worth masking up for. Come see for yourself.

After marveling, take a stroll to the Library’s art section and pick up some imagination refreshment. Recommended vis-à-vis this show: “The Innocent Eye,” Jonathan Fineberg (704 Fine); “Maria Kalman: Various Illuminations,” Ingrid Schaffner (709.2 Scha); “Passing in the Outsider Lane,” by Dan Prince, a Clark County native (709.2273 Prin); and, Leonora Carrington: surrealism, alchemy and art, Susan L. Aberth (759.972 Aber). “The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington,” Leonora Carrington (F Carr) is highly recommended for fans of Kelly Link and Angela Carter.
In February, Joan Pruden’s photography students from Calvary Christian School will be exhibiting photos in the Library’s reference section.
