Deceased woman identified

A Clark County Detention Center inmate died Wednesday morning soon after being brought to the jail.

County Coroner Robert Gayheart had not yet released the name of the young woman when the print edition of the Sun went to press Thursday because he still had to notify relatives, but on Friday, Trooper Gary Adam Hall of the Kentucky identified her Friday as  Rachel Cole, 28, of Winchester.

Cole’s  body was at the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville Thursday for an autopsy.

Jailer Frank Doyle said Thursday that the woman, who was in her late 20s, was brought to the jail about 1 a.m. Wednesday and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest.

She was kept in the booking area for observation, and she became ill.

“Things apparently went downhill from there,” Doyle said, and his staff administered Narcan and cardiopulmonary resuscitation until EMS arrived and took her to Clark Regional Hospital, where she died after 5 a.m.

Narcan is a drug used to revive victims of heroin or opioid overdoses.

Gayheart said the Kentucky State Police is investigating the death.

KSP Post 7 in Richmond did not return the Sun’s phone call or answer an email prior to its midday deadline Thursday for the weekend edition.

“We’re sorry for the loss of anyone, but there was no wrongdoing on our part, and all that will come out in the investigation,” the jailer said.
