Once again, more than two dozen new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Clark County over the past week. 

During the seven-day window of Saturday, Oct. 10, to Sunday, Oct. 16, there were 25 new cases reported locally.

On Monday, the Clark County Health Department reported 16 more cases, including eight from Saturday, two from Sunday and six from Monday, bringing the community’s total to 528. 

There were no new deaths reported last week. There have been 10 deaths reported locally. 

Last week saw fewer cases reported than the prior week, when there were 36 cases reported, which was the third highest number of cases reported in a single week

There have already been 64 new local cases reported in October. 

According to the Clark County Health Department’s Oct. 16 daily COVID-19 update, which was the last date for which data was available before The Sun’s press deadline, 457 people have recovered locally and 45 cases remained active. 

As of Sept. 30, 33 local patients have required hospitalization. 

The majority of local cases have been among the 19 to 29 and 60 to 69 age range, accounting for 167 of the total cases in Clark County. 

The fewest cases have been among the 80 and older range, accounting for 39 of the total local cases. 

There have been 57 cases reported among those 18 and younger. Of those, 19 were ages 14 to 18, six were ages 11 to 13, 23 were ages 5 to 10 and nine were 4 or younger.

Statewide, there continues to be record-breaking numbers of cases reported. 

Saturday, Gov. Andy Beshear reported the highest numbers for a Saturday on record, with 1,295 of newly reported cases that day. He said that was the fourth highest single-day number of new cases as well. 

“Things are not moving in the right direction; they continue to escalate,” Beshear said during his Saturday press conference. “This virus is our enemy, not each other.”

As of Monday afternoon, there had been 87,607 confirmed cases of the virus in the state, and 1,317 deaths attributed to it. 

Statewide, the majority of cases are among those 20 to 29, accounting for 16,883 of the total cases, but there has been only one death reported among that age group. 

Those aged 80 and older, which is the age group with the fewest reported cases, have accounted for the most deaths. There have been 4,329 cases reported in this age range, but 653 deaths. 

Additionally, Beshear said there are more Kentuckians hospitalized and in the intensive care unit because of complications from the potentially deadly virus than ever before. 

“October is on pace to be our highest ever number of coronavirus cases reported within a month,” said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Department for Public Health. “We’re in the midst of an escalation in cases and our hospitalizations are increasing now, too. As the holidays approach, it’s imperative to limit further spread. Practice social distancing, wear a face covering and practice good hand hygiene to reduce your chances of contracting COVID-19.”
