In Clark County, 3,960 vehicle registrations remain unpaid beyond their expiration date, and time is running out for vehicle owners to pay their registration and taxes without incurring a penalty.

Owners must pay by 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, when the county clerk’s office closes.

Beginning Oct. 7, any unpaid registration due at the end of September or earlier will be considered past due, and a penalty will be added for the entire overdue period.

That means registrations due at the end of March will have seven months of penalties tacked onto the original bill.

“I want to make sure people to know it’s retroactive,” Clark County Clerk Michelle Turner said Monday.

Earlier this year, the Transportation Cabinet granted a grace period for all vehicle and vessel registrations and disabled driver parking placards administered by the county clerk offices and the cabinet. The window was created to ease the burden on those adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic so they could have until the close of business on Oct. 6 to pay without penalty.

Registrations can be renewed in Turner’s office during regular office hours: Monday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.
