The George Rogers Clark boys and girls basketball teams are both set to play games this weekend.
The boys team will travel north to Kenton County to take on a Scott High Friday night and the girls have games on Friday and Saturday against Paul Laurence Dunbar and St. Joseph Central out of Huntington, W. Va.
Scott High’s boys basketball team has struggled this year, picking up only four wins in their first 16 games. The Eagles will enter the contest as losers of five straight games, most recently a four-point loss to another 10th Region opponent, Calvary Christian.
GRC is 15-2 against Scott all-time and has won the last two meetings between the schools, including a three-point win in last year’s 10th Region tournament.
The Eagles are led by junior guard Grant Profitt, who is averaging 20.3 points per game. Profitt is one of only five 20 point scorers in the 10th Region and is in the top 50 in the state in points per game.
Sophomore center Cameron Patterson is another threat for the Eagles, averaging 10.0 points per game and is their leading rebounder, averaging 7.3 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Kyle Huelsman is the Eagles’ best 3-point specialist. Huelsman is shooting 47.6 percent from behind the arc this season and is making 3.2 threes per game.
KJ Rucker will likely draw the assignment of guarding Profitt. Profitt was held scoreless in last year’s meeting, and if Rucker is able to keep him there again, the Cards will likely come back with a win.
Lincoln Bush will matchup with Patterson down low. Bush will look to pick up where he left off at the end of GRC’s game against Bourbon County, where he scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and hauled in 21 rebounds to lift the Cards to a win against one of the region’s top teams.
GRC’s Jared Wellman will look to outperform Huelsman from behind the arc. Wellman is one of the Cards’ top 3-point shooters but can get it done from everywhere on the floor. Wellman has scored in double figures in all but three games this season.
The Lady Cardinals’ first matchup of the weekend is a home contest against Dunbar Friday night. Despite winning three straight against the Lady Bulldogs, GRC is 7-9 all-time against the Lexington school.
Dunbar enters the game 12-6 and has had one of the best seasons in the 11th Region.
Elise Ellison-Coons leads the way for the Lady Bulldogs, averaging a 14.9-point, 10.3-rebound double-double through the team’s first 18 games. Ellison-Coons has led Dunbar to three straight wins entering the matchup with GRC and picked up a double-double in each of the wins. Dunbar is 8-2 this season in games that Ellison-Coons has a double-double.
Brianna Byars will likely be the Cardinal trying to keep Ellison-Coons off the glass and out of the scorebook. Byars is averaging a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game this season, the third-most in the region. She is also the team’s best shot-blocker, sending away 1.3 shots per game.
The Lady Cardinals will have their hands full on Saturday as they travel to Louisville Mercy to compete in the Raatz Fence/O’Shea Classic against one of the nation’s top teams, St. Joseph Central out of Huntington, WV.
MaxPreps has the undefeated Irish listed as the best team in West Virginia and the 24th best team in the country.
St. Joseph has four players who average 10 points or more per game. Their leading scorer is shooting guard Grace Hutson, who averages 18.9 points per game.
The Irish do a good job finding open players as they average 18.5 assists per game. Their point guard, Bailee Adkins, sets the tone for the Irish’s passing game. Adkins, a senior, averages 6.4 assists per game and will continue her basketball career at Dayton next season.
The Lady Cardinals have a Division I basketball player of their own, who will likely be in charge of slowing down Adkins, Kennedy Igo. Igo is the Cardinals’ leading scorer at 12.9 points per game and has helped lead GRC to a 2-1 record after returning from an injury that sidelined her for two games.
Another Lady Cardinal who could assist in slowing down the Irish’s attack is Shelbi Wilson. Wilson stepped up for the Lady Cards while Igo was out with an has continued her high-level of play after Igo’s return. Over the last five games, Wilson is averaging 10 points per game and has been a big contributor on defense.
With district tournaments a month away, this will be a big weekend for both teams as they enter the home stretch of the regular season.
The boys game against Scott High is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip Friday night. The girls game against Dunbar is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Friday night and their game against St. Joseph is scheduled for 4 p.m.
