The Robert D. Campbell eighth-grade volleyball team hosted their first-round game in the Bluegrass Middle School Conference’s volleyball tournament Wednesday night.
The Lady Cardinals finished the regular season 9-7 but ended on a high note, picking up wins in each of their final three division games.
Their late-season hot streak earned them the No. 2 seed in the South Divison.
RDC was matched up with Woodford County, who finished the season 8-8. The Yellow Jackets were the No. 3 seed in the North Division.
The first set saw the teams trade off points until RDC was able to rattle off six straight points behind Allee Mullins’s serving, giving the Cards a 13-6 lead.
Woodford County responded shortly after by winning nine straight points to even the game back at 16-16.
The two sides would battle it out down the stretch, trading off points until Campbell was able to win the set 21-19 after a Woodford County fault.
The two teams then switched sides to play what would end up being the deciding set for the Lady Cardinals.
Woodford struck first, breaking RDC’s serve on the first point of the second set.
Jordan Thompson stepped up early for RDC, winning the next seven points to put the Cards in front.
The Yellow Jackets would cut the score to 9-4 at one point, but couldn’t get it any closer as RDC went on to pick up the 21-9 victory and move on to the next round.
RDC will take on the winner of Royal Spring vs. Georgetown Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Royal Spring Middle School in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
