George Rogers Clark’s boys and girls basketball teams took on Bourbon County Tuesday night for a 40th District doubleheader.

Tuesday night’s game was a test for both teams as Bourbon County has a top team in the region in boys and girls.

Both teams entered the game on long win streaks against the Colonels.

The girls team had won 30 straight, dating back to 2008.

The Lady Cardinals were in a close game early as both sides failed to hit shots.

Bourbon County tied the game up at 16 midway through the second quarter but the Lady Cards ended the half on a high note.

A Kennedy Igo 3-pointer started a 9-0 Clark County run to close the half and give GRC a 25-16 lead.

Both team’s defenses stepped up in the third quarter, forcing both teams to go nearly four minutes without a basket midway through the period. Each team would end up scoring 10 points in the quarter, leaving GRC’s lead at nine points.

The Lady Cardinals went on a run to begin the final period, scoring the first five points of the fourth quarter.

Bourbon County made one more run after their coach was assessed with a technical foul, but they failed to cut their deficit to closer than six points.

GRC went on to outscore the Colonels 20-9 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 56-35 win.

The Colonels entered the game without their leading scorer, Amirion Joyce, after he was ejected from Bourbon County’s game against John Hardin Sunday night.

The two teams were evenly matched through the first quarter, with Bourbon County getting separation on a last-second shot to put them ahead 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Colonels rode that momentum into the second quarter, scoring four points in 30 seconds to extend their lead to seven, which would end up being their largest lead of the game.

But head coach Josh Cook called a timeout to rally his team. The Cards came out of the timeout and went on a 9-2 run to tie the game.

Another last-second shot put Bourbon County on top by one possession at the break, leading GRC 27-25.

The third quarter belonged to Jared Wellman, who hit three 3-pointers on his way to 13 points in the quarter.

At the end of the third quarter, a buzzer-beater was once again the only thing separating the teams. This time it was Jerone Morton who put the Cardinals ahead entering the final period.

GRC was able to pull away from the Colonels in the final period, largely thanks to Lincoln Bush who picked up 13 points in the final frame.

Bourbon County cut the Cards’ lead to as few as four points with 1:30 to play, but GRC held on to pick up a 77-65 win against one of the top teams in the 10th Region.
