GRC girls basketball head coach Robbie Graham has had much success during his tenure at Clark County, winning 17 of 21 matchups against Montgomery County. The last nine meetings between the two teams have gone to the Lady Cardinals, including GRC’s most recent win earlier this week. The back-to-back games against the Lady Indians mark the first time in the history of the series the Lady Cards have played consecutive games against Montgomery County.

Montgomery County (6-10) hung with the Cardinals through the first three quarters of Monday’s meeting before the Cardinals pulled away in the fourth quarter. GRC outscored Montgomery County 25-8 in the final period to win their ninth straight in the series.

Senior guard Shelbi Wilson led the way for GRC in the win, scoring a career-high 20 points.

GRC’s Kennedy Igo missed the Lady Cardinals’ last two games against Montgomery County but is still the Cards’ leading scorer among active players against the rival school, scoring 99 points against the Indians. Igo, who started her varsity career in Montgomery County before transferring to GRC her freshman year, scored more points as an Indian (84) against the Lady Cardinals than any active player for Montgomery County.

The two teams have only played one common opponent to this point in the season. Each team fell to another 40th District foe, Paris, on the Lady Hounds’ home court. The Lady Cards lost by one to Paris and the Lady Indians fell by 10 points.

The boys basketball teams have met on the hardwood 139 times, including seven times under fourth-year head coach Josh Cook. Cook hasn’t lost to the Indians during his time in Winchester, picking up seven wins in the process.

The wins brought good times back to Winchester after an 11-game losing streak to the Indians before Cook’s arrival.

Cook is familiar with the first-year head coach of the Indians, Steve Wright, after knocking him out of the 12th Region tournament in back-to-back years when the coaches were at Mercer County and Southwestern, respectively.

GRC’s leading scorer in the series is junior wing Jared Wellman, who has scored 29 points in his time for the Cards against Montgomery County.

The teams have played two common opponents going into the game: Paris and West Jessamine. Montgomery County beat Paris 82-46 at Paris and beat West Jessamine 69-68 on the road. GRC has played Paris twice and won both contests, once by 31 points and one by 18. GRC also beat West Jessamine on a neutral court 78-74.

The Indians’ top players are Hagan Harrison and Rickey Lovette.

Harrison is the leading scorer for Montgomery County, averaging 18.2 points per game, and the team’s top 3-point shooter, shooting 40.5 percent from behind the arc.

Lovette is the leading rebounder for the Indians, pulling down 7.9 rebounds per game. He is also the second-leading scorer at 11.4 points per game and shoots 55.2 percent from the field.

The girls game is scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m. and the boys game will follow, with a scheduled tip time of 7:30 p.m.
