George Rogers Clark’s girls basketball team traveled to Bullitt East to compete in the Queen of the Commonwealth tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Cardinals, the seventh-ranked team heading into the season, were joined by eight more teams ranked in the top 25 of the coaches’ preseason poll.
Their first matchup came against Assumption Friday night. The Rockets were not in the top 25 in the preseason but came into the matchup with a 5-2 record.
Clark County struggled out of the gate, trailing by nine at halftime. They entered the fourth quarter trailing by a slightly smaller margin, down seven, but they turned it on in the final period.
A 19-point offensive outburst along with allowing only eight points defensively gave the Lady Cards a 48-44 victory over the Rockets.
Kennedy Igo led the way with 13 points, followed by Trinity Gay with 12. Shelbi Wilson finished with nine points, Brianna Byars and Tyra Flowers each finished with four and Amber Miller and Ciara Byars each finished with two.
After the win, the Lady Cardinals moved on to a matchup with Bowling Green.
The Purples won their first matchup against Louisville Butler, the 18th-ranked team in the coaches’ preseason poll, to advance to their quarterfinal matchup with GRC.
The Lady Cardinals stepped on the gas early, jumping out to a 29-19 lead by halftime.
Bowling Green battled to get back in the game in the second half, outscoring the Lady Cardinals 14-8 in the third quarter and 13-6 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
The two teams each scored three points in the first overtime, forcing a second.
GRC was able to come away with a 57-51 win after the second overtime, advancing them to the semifinals.
The Lady Cardinals were led in scoring by Brianna Byars, who finished with 22 points. Flowers and Igo each finished in double figures, scoring 12 and 11, respectively. Gay scored six points. Erica Berry scored five and Wilson scored one point to round out the Cardinals scoring.
Clark County was met by the Mercy Jaguars in the semifinals, the team the Lady Cardinals knocked off in the first round of the state tournament last season.
Coming in as the No. 3 team in the preseason coaches’ poll combined with the revenge factor of last season’s season-ending loss, the Jaguars were going to be a tough team to beat for the Lady Cardinals.
Igo led the Cards early, scoring 18 points in the first half and giving GRC a 31-29 lead heading into halftime.
But the Jaguars made adjustments, mainly focusing on shutting down Igo. The Jaguars held Igo scoreless in the second half and would advance to the Queen of the Commonwealth championship game.
Igo led Clark County with 18 points. Brianna Byars was second with 11 points. Flowers and Wilson each scored seven points. Gay scored five points. Ciara Byars scored two, and Berry scored one.
