GAME OF THE WEEK: GRC girls basketball vs. Scott
Published 4:07 pm Tuesday, December 10, 2019
In what would’ve been a matchup between the two favorites for 10th Region Player of the Year, it appears as if only George Rogers Clark’s Kennedy Igo will play in Saturday’s matchup against Scott High.
Scott’s Mya Meredith, a preseason first team all-region selection by the 10th Region Coaches Association, went down in the Lady Eagles’ season opener with a knee injury and has yet to return to the floor for game action. Meredith was selected as second team all-state last year after averaging 25 points and eight rebounds.
The two teams were listed as the top-two teams in the region by the coaches association heading into the year, but the Lady Eagles are still searching for their first win after Meredith’s injury.
GRC’s Robbie Graham is 7-4 against Scott in his tenure as head coach of the Lady Cardinals, including five straight and a spotless 4-0 record in the postseason.
Igo will look to continue her success against the Lady Eagles after scoring 25 points in the region semifinals to end Scott’s season last year.
Freshman Brianna Byars had success against Scott last year as an eighth-grader, scoring 11 points on 5-8 shooting in the six-point win in the region tournament.
The Lady Eagles top player if Meredith doesn’t take the floor will likely be Sofia Allen. Allen currently leads the team in scoring at 19 points per game and rebounding with 9.5 per game.
The game will be a tripleheader with the freshmen teams playing at 3 p.m. with junior varsity and varsity to follow. Varsity tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Campbell Jr. High.
